114-001 Figurative Dance Canopy (Kandaure)

The Kandaure is a beautiful dance ornament used by the Toraja people of Sulawesi, Indonesia in dance rituals. It is fashioned from beads that are strung together in the shape of a funnel. When suspended from its narrow end, it widens into a canopy that ends in long fringes. Kandaures are worn by young women on their backs in sacred lifecycle rituals. They are also proudly displayed on poles next to traditional houses (tongkonans), fluttering in the breeze. The human figures at the top of the kandaure depict ancestors.
