114-004 Rare Iban Dayak Loin Cloth (Klapong Sirat)
114-004 Rare Iban Dayak Loin Cloth (Klapong Sirat)

This small cloth was used by elder Dayak men as a front tail flap in the old days in Sarawak, Borneo. The cloth is decorated with three woven bands showing geometric patterns (vertical lines and lozenges) and two bands embroidered with stylized human figures. The lower end of the cloth has ball fringes. Production of such cloths ceased in the late 19th century and good specimens are rare today. This cloth is a little soiled in places but overall in good condition for its age. A detailed description of klapong sirat cloths is given in Alfred C. Haddon, Iban and Sea Dayak Fabrics and Their Patterns.
