Mamuli are precious heirloom ornaments distinctive to the traditional Sumba society. Made from silver or gold, they are worn by men as well as women either as an ear ornament or a pendant. The typical shape of a mamuli is that a rhombus with a concave center. There is a round hole and a slit in the middle which represents the female genitalia, a symbol of woman's sexuality and reproductive power. In all but the simplest examples, the base or "feet" of a mamuli is decorated with animals such as birds or buffalos and in rare cases, with human warrior figures. This example is made of silver with bird motifs at the base. It has a smooth patina derived from years of use and handling.
