114-018 Royal Ceremonial Headpiece (Lamba)

This golden headpiece or lamba, shaped like the horns of a water buffalo, is part of the ritual heirloom regalia worn by the royal men of East Sumba, Indonesia. It is decorated with lively pictorial scenes featuring horse and rider on either side of a central sun as well as vegetal tendrils soaring symbolically to the

heavens, images that evoke the power and wealth of a royal clan. The crescent shape is also said to reference the ships that brought the ancestors to the island more than 4,000 years ago.
