118-019 Ushnishvijaya stupa mandala thangka in brocade

This Newari style stupa mandala thangka is extremely rare and unique. The central deity of the mandala is the goddess Ushnishvijaya ( in Tibetan: Tsugtor Nampar Gyalma ) She is the Goddess of long life, purification, longevity and healing. She is a very popular deity in India, Nepal and Tibet. She is often the central harmonic vibrational presence in Newari mandalas. She is the protector deity of the Namgyal monastery, in Tibet, which has been the personal monastery of the Dalai Lamas since the third Dalai Lama in 1571. She is the embodiment of 'ushnisha', the power to defeat death. In this mandala, she resides in the central stupa, surrounded by the four directional stupas which are empowered by the Maha-Siddhis. The mandala arises from the elemental realm to the realm of Mankind, then it manifests the attributes of the Pure Mind, which aspires to the realm of the Buddhas. This is a very rare thangka painted by one of Nepal's greatest living artists, Basu Lama. This is a very auspicious meditative instrument which, if humbly absorbed, will bring one grace and blessings.
