118-033 Rare Antique Thai 'Mudmee Ikat' Pa Sin silk woman's sarong unique waistband

This handmade Thai natural silk, two piece Pa Sin sarong, has aged beautifully. It's gained character like a pair of fine quality selvage blue jeans. The tie-dye effect on the main body of the silk sarong is created, over time, by varying the intensity of the color in the different threads. That creates the dreamy deep purple color layering that blends and bleeds into a hypnotic color scheme. Several washings add to that effect. The overall design uses straight lines, in which are enclosed 'Nag' snake motifs. The renderings are quite detailed and subtle.
This sarong has a unique large woven cotton waist band, which has very complex geometric patterns embroidered with various colored silk threads. The color scheme of the waist band beautifully complements the colors in the main body of the sarong. The quality of the embroidery workmanship in the waist band reveals the considerable skill of this weaver. That work is very difficult and takes a great deal of time to accomplish. The contrast of the subdued nature of the silk pattern and the intensity and boldness of the embroidery work on the cotton waist band creates quite a remarkable statement. It's a stunning combination that works harmoniously. It's an extremely attractive example of the Thai weaving arts. All natural dyes were used. Made entirely by hand.
